[News] Food prices expected to rise by up to 4.5% next year, but some items will be cheaper

Although grocery prices may increase by $700 next year, Canadians will find it cheaper to buy a few items, including dry goods and perishables, found a report by researchers at Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, University of British Columbia and University of Saskatchewan. Canada’s Food Price Report 2024, a joint effort by four universities, now predicts that 2024 will bring slight relief to the problem.

Food bank visits have increased 94 per cent since 2019, the non-profit found. In addition, one in five Calgarians cannot afford healthy food.

Prices are already dropping on some items, said Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University and one of the authors of the report.

Coffee, flour and dry pasta are selling for slightly less than in August.
