TITLE: Environmental Impacts of Healthcare and Research
Presenter: Dr. Ilona Hale, MD FCFP. Clinical Assistant Professor, UBC Department of Family Practice, Director, Rural Scholars Program
Abstract: There is growing recognition that climate change and environmental degradation are growing problems which have direct health effects. The healthcare system itself also contributes to these issues as everything we do in healthcare has an environmental footprint. Typically we think about these impacts based on the visible waste that we confront day to day (paper, plastic, electricity, etc) and focus our efforts on reducing these. This presentation will focus on new research that has made it clear that the majority of our environmental impact arises from the "invisible" upstream waste in our system.
TITLE: A snapshot of research collaborations in the East Kootenay Region
Presenters: Dr. Denise Jaworsky and Jen Siemens, College of the Rockies (CotR), and 4th year UVic BSN students at CotR- Ashley Giesbrecht, Nik Eliasson and Catherine Motion
Abstract: In this presentation, we will discuss existing and developing research collaborations in the East Kootenay Region. We will highlight the nursing research program at the College of the Rockies as well as plans to bring clinical trials to the East Kootenay Region. We will discuss opportunities for student and community engagement, share highlights from the recent Accelerating Clinical Trials national meeting in Prince Edward Island and discuss Interior Health collaborations to support clinical research in small and rural communities.

TITLE: Understanding the Impacts of Team Culture on Primary Care Teams
Presenter: Ashmita Rai, PhD Student and Project Coordinator, School of Nursing, University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus
Abstract: Primary care teams (PCT) in British Columbia have evolved with the development and implementation of primary care networks, urgent and primary care centres, and community health centres. Team culture can have a great impact on team functioning and processes. This study aims to explore how PCT members work together as a team and to better understand how team culture impacts team functioning. Results will benefit each of the PCTs in better understanding team culture and team functioning within their team across primary care settings.

TITLE: Building a Model of Community Support for Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 Patients within Interior Health: Research, Evaluation, and Care in a Learning Health System
Presenters: Dr. Barbara Jean Buckley, Principal Investigator and Danielle Wittal, Clinical Research Coordinator
Abstract: In British Columbia, efforts to manage Post-Acute Sequelae began in late 2020 through the Post COVID-19 Interdisciplinary Clinical Care Network (PC-ICCN). Support for this network arose out of increasing concern that patients could overwhelm primary care and hospital services with complex care needs, requiring future chronic disease management and rehabilitation. This network supported collaboration among clinical specialists, researchers, patients, and health administration to form a Learning Health System (LHS) across the province to provide services for post Covid “long-haulers.” In response to evolving needs in the region, the Interior Health Research Department has received funding to develop an IH node for the PC-ICCN network using a LHS approach. IH developed a post-COVID community-based interdisciplinary care model that integrated research into all core care activities of the virtual clinic. Using a two-stage sequential exploratory mixed method research design we explored both provider and participant experiences; and found what facilitated or constrained our model in creating better outcomes for patients. In this presentation, we will present both patient and provider experiences with a virtual community-based interdisciplinary team led Post-Acute Sequelae of Covid-19 care model.

TITLE: Family Involvement in British Columbia LTC Facilities During a Pandemic: The Impact of COVID-19 Restrictions
Presenter: Tracy Christianson RN, MN, DHEd, CCNE Associate Professor Graduate Programs Coordinator School of Nursing
Abstract: In long-term care (LTC) family involvement has been linked directly to better LTC resident quality of life and family satisfaction with care. The public health restrictions implemented to protect the vulnerable LTC population created a serious infringement of families’ ability to visit and care for their loved ones in these care facilities. While much of the early research on the impact of the restrictions focused on the LTC resident and the paid care staff, the purpose of this study was to explore what the consequences COVID-19 restrictions had on family involvement and family well-being in LTC facilities across the province of British Columbia.
