[Impact Story] Elizabeth's story (Volunteer Cowichan Better at Home)
After years of keeping the world out, Elizabeth finally welcomed life back in thanks to Better at Home.
Elizabeth first joined Better at Home through Volunteer Cowichan in Duncan, BC, in 2021, receiving grocery deliveries during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, she preferred volunteers leave items on her porch as she was hesitant to let anyone inside her home.
Like many other seniors, Elizabeth faced deep isolation during the pandemic. To fill the void, she turned to online shopping — each package on her doorstep became something to look forward to. Over time, that habit grew, and clutter began to take over her home. She kept her blinds closed, worried someone might see the mess.
That changed in September 2024, when Elizabeth enrolled in the Enhanced Light Housekeeping pilot program. With compassion and care, Better at Home Coordinator Kellie Turner, worked with her to create a personalized cleaning plan focused on fall prevention, reducing fire hazards, and safe food storage. In addition to housekeeping support, the enhanced model provided time and space for a social visit as well.
Seven months later, Elizabeth’s home and life were transformed. Her living space became tidy, comfortable, and a place she truly enjoyed spending time in. Thanks to the enhanced program, Elizabeth could be proud of her space and share it with others.
The change had a profound impact on her confidence and wellbeing.
“Before I was given the opportunity to have the Enhanced Housekeeping service, I was too embarrassed and too worried to have anyone in my house. Since then, I’ve invited my neighbours and my daughter into my home — after not having anyone over for almost 15 years. I feel like a real person again.” ~ Elizabeth
Elizabeth’s story is a powerful reminder of how small acts of support can lead to big changes.
