Project Description
The Metro Vancouver HomeShare Pilot Program will match at least 10 post-secondary students to live with 10 older adults aged 55 or above living in the Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby areas who have a spare room in their home. In exchange for a reduced rental rate between $400-600 per month, the student provides up to seven hours per week of companionship and/or light help with household tasks. Canada HomeShare began as a pilot project in 2018 in Toronto through the Toronto Seniors Strategy. The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE) implemented the pilot with city and community partners. After a successful conclusion, the program was expanded in Toronto and implemented in Barrie. in January 2020 in partnership with the Office of the Mayor and Georgian College. The purpose of the program is to empower older adults wishing to age-in-place in their homes with additional income, help around the home, and companionship, as well as to address the lack of affordable student housing in the City. Past participants report significant benefits from their participation, including positive social engagement and less financial stress. The success of the Toronto HomeShare model has now been proven and is newly expanding to Vancouver in partnership with Simon Fraser University. We are hiring a site coordinator to be a key program staff member to implement the Vancouver HomeShare Pilot Program.
