[Report] Enabling Aging in Place Promising Practices: Better at Home

resource image

United Way BC’s Better at Home program has been recognized by Healthcare Excellence Canada as a leading model for enabling aging in place for older adults in BC!

Better at Home transforms the way we support seniors, offering a range of services such as light housekeeping, grocery assistance, prepared meal delivery, light yard work, minor home repairs, prescription pick-up/delivery, transportation to appointments, snow removal, group activities, and friendly visits that help older adults live independently and engaged in their communities.

What makes the Better at Home model successful?

1. Relevance & Continued Need – Better at Home remains crucial, especially with the rising number of low-income older adults in BC. It adapts to changing social, economic, and environmental conditions, ensuring it stays essential in providing accessible support for seniors to maintain their independence.

2. Community Integration – Better at Home strengthens its role within local communities, becoming a vital part of the continuum of care for older adults in BC. Its focus on a "seniors-planning-for-seniors" approach ensures services are tailored to local needs.

3. Achievements & Impact – From 2022–2023, 275,014 services were provided to 13,369 participants, with 5,142 of them being newly enrolled. This shows the program’s ongoing ability to reach and support older adults across BC despite COVID-19 related challenges.
