Canada’s longstanding tradition of volunteerism plays a vital role in upholding our social support system and building community resilience. Volunteerism is also a powerful vehicle for helping us address critical social, economic, health, and environmental issues. However, recent trends signal a crisis in volunteering and participation, marked by declining volunteer rates and increasing demands on organizations that provide essential services. Overlaying this crisis, we are seeing a growing loneliness epidemic and eroding social cohesion, both of which undermine the health and resilience of our communities. The magnitude of these has brought into sharp relief the need for a collective effort to build better infrastructure to support our communities. Against this backdrop, we must solidify volunteering and participation as foundational building blocks of a strong, inclusive, and resilient future. A National Volunteer Action Strategy will help us do this. It will serve as an anchor and a compass for a movement to build belonging and inclusion by optimizing and futureproofing volunteering so that everyone in Canada can participate and benefit. Volunteer Canada, along with a growing network of stakeholders, is laying the foundation to develop this Strategy.
