The Role of Structural Ageism in Age Beliefs and Health of Older Persons
In this commentary, Dr. Becca Levy, author of Breaking the Age Code, notes that rather than targeting negative age beliefs only at the individual level, the most effective way to diminish the negativity is to target the root cause of the association between age beliefs and health outcomes: structural ageism, which is the discrimination directed against older persons by the policies of institutions and the actions of those affiliated with them.
